Today a Pōwhiri took place at Wharekaho to commemorate the first amicable encounter between Māori and Pākeha 250 years ago. Over 2,000 people joined a hīkoi down Wharekaho beach and over 900 people attended the pōwhiri and a hākari at Wharetaewa Pā.
