Voluntary rāhui imposed on Coromandel scallop fishery

Opito Bay Rāhui
Voluntary ban (rāhui) on taking scallops in Opito Bay

Opito Bay locals have joined forces with Ngāti Hei to put a voluntary rāhui in place, banning scallop harvesting over summer.

The rāhui was put in place by kaumātua Joe Davis of Ngāti Hei during a ceremony today (Thursday 17th December).

As well as Ngāti Hei, Opito Bay Ratepayers Association, the Mercury Bay Sport Fishing Club, Tairua-Pauanui Sport Fishing Club, Whangamata Ocean Sports Club, New Zealand Underwater Association and Spearfishing NZ, New Zealand Sport Fishing Council and LegaSea are calling for change.

At this stage the rāhui is a voluntary protection. However, Ngāti Hei may look at applying for an official rāhui in the coming months.
