Joe Davis made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit

Well-known Wharekaho resident and Ngāti Hei kaumātua, Joe Davis, has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List released on Monday this week. Joe received the award for his services to Māori and conservation.

Joe represents Ngāti Hei on the Hauraki Māori Trust Board and is a treaty negotiator for Ngāti Hei and Ngāpuhi. He’s a member of the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve Committee and served for three terms on Waikato Regional Council’s Coromandel Catchment Committee. He was also an inaugural member of the Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari Stakeholder Working Group, which led to the publication of the first Hauraki Gulf/Tikapa Moana Marine Spatial Plan.

Joe is trustee of the Mercury 250th Anniversary Trust and was responsible for organising last year’s Tuia 250 pōwhiri at Wharekaho.
